Hi there! just a reminder that the "tu" used to exist in English as well-you can find it in the Bible and in Shakespeare!- we used to say 'thou' and "you" in the same way that French uses "tu" and "vous" which is why old English sounds so strange to modern ears ( or so my pupils tell me!)

En Italien on dit: "tu" à ses parents, amies, collègues, élèves...mais on doit dire "Lei", c'est à dire "Vous" aux professeurs, aux Directeurs et meme à tous ce qui sont plus agés ou plus importants que nous pour ce qui concerne le travail. J'éspère que ce que j'ai dit soit clair! A bientot!
P.S. Some English now!:) I am sorry for the accents, but... I have got an Italian keyboard!

In Romanian "tu" is used exactly as in French.
(Romanian is a Latin language related to French, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese.)
The difference is that for addressing to somebody in a very polite way ( a teacher, an elder person etc) you use "dumneavoastra" for the second person singular.
But for friends, parents,people use "tu".

En Hollande les jeunes disent 'tu' aux autres jeunes, mais aussi aux adultes de plus en plus. Ça dépend du ton (qui fait la politesse). Vouvoyer est aussi une question d'intelligence et de la position sociale de la famille où on est élevé.
